Weekly World Numismatic News for June 30, 2019

News of the week is not happening on the pages of the non-numismatic media but in the precious metals market. Specifically, the rise in the price of gold. While this news makes the gold bugs happy, it is a bad indicator for the rest of us. With the price of gold opening at $1,279.00 on […]

Collecting is in the Thrill of the Hunt

By Daryl Conley I started collecting when I was about 10 or 12, so about 45 years ago. I went   through anyone’s pocket change that would let me do so. I still check all my pocket change, along with my wife’s. I don’t put together registry sets or buy registry quality coins. I don’t have any gold and I only a handful of silver dollars. I don’t spend thousands, or even hundreds of dollars on a single coin. I don’t buy high grade coins, although I do have a couple slabbed coins in circulated grades. In most things, I believe quality is better than quantity. But when it comes to coin collecting, I am much happier having a wide variety of inexpensive coins. As my collection has grown, I have expanded my search to include large cents, and earlier coins from the 18th and 19th century. My latest interest has become acquiring Liberty Cap and Draped Bust cents by Sheldon variety. I also have later large cents that I sort by Newcomb variety, although this is a bit more challenging as the...

Why Is Caesar Rodney Honored On the First US Statehood Quarter?

Caesar Rodney is depicted on the reverse of the 1999 Delaware statehood quarter. (Image courtesy of the United States Mint) When the U.S. government passed a law establishing the U.S. Statehood Quarter series, the coins were issued in the order that the states ratified the U.S. Constitution or joined the Union.  Thus, Delaware was honored on the first coin in the series. The reverse shows a man riding on a galloping horse.  He is Caesar Rodney.  Before I lived in Dover, Delaware for a couple of months in the summer of 1968, I had never heard of him.  By the time I returned to Michigan, I understood why he is so renowned in Delaware.  It would have completely surprised me if the Delaware Statehood Quarter issued in 1999 had depicted anything other than Caesar Rodney riding on a horse. It is almost a shame that not many Americans living outside of Delaware are aware of how much this nation owes to this Revolutionary hero.  Here is the story, which is esp...

Tone of the Current Coin Market is Optimistic

Anxiety! The threat of a war with Iran, the Federal Reserve Bank considering lowering interest rates at its next meeting, and gold; the metal which has been quietly appreciating modestly suddenly took off as the US dollar dropped in exchange rate value on the world market. This in turn impacted gold bullion and collectible gold coins. Silver followed the spot price of the yellow metal, although not as dramatically. The ratio between gold and silver continues to expand, this perhaps being of future concern. Once again, however, with silver above its resistance level of $15 an ounce its price is impacting bullion and collectible coins. Dealers continue to be cautious, mostly leaving buying prices alone, while raising the sales price of intrinsic value impacted coins as according to the market. Scarce to rare coins have been holding their value nicely, but now appear to finally have an opportunity for significant increases as the business of coins looks ahead to see if this may usher ...
