Uncommon Canadian note brings $22,800

Canadian rarities proved popular at Heritage’s CSNS World Currency Signature Auction held April 26-30 in Chicago.

Prices realized were headed by a charming French text, Canadian commemorative $25 of 1935. This is the note with vignettes of King George V & Queen Mary in their coronation robes (P-15). Not only did it come graded a highly desirable PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ, it also sported serial number F000008.

Given that most low serials of this issue are in the Bank of Canada’s Currency Museum, it was unsurprising when the note was bid up to $22,800. Even so, that price could be regarded by many collectors as something of a steal.

A scarce “Devil’s Face” $1,000, P-73, was not all that far back in the field. Just 30,000 of these were printed, and given the note’s PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 condition, it had little problem in reaching $19,200.

Scarce Australian £5, ND (1949-54), P-31s, with serial TA51 000001 i.e. SPECIMEN has been overprinted on a note originally intended for circulation. It proved a steal at $21,600 in PCGS Choice New 63. (Image courtesy and © Heritage Auctions, www.ha.com)

Sandwiched between the two Canadian pieces, pricewise, was an Australian rarity: a Commonwealth £5 specimen, ND (1949-54), P-31s. Unlike most other specimens of this issue, which have all zero serials, that on offer sported serial TA51 000001. Graded PCGS Choice New 63, it took $21,600.

That price would seem to be a bargain. Heritage sold a similar example in 2015 for $40,000, and two current Australian catalogs price this particular note at $45,000 and $100,000.

Other high rollers included:

• India, 50 rupees (1930), Cawnpore, P-9e, PMG Very Fine 30: $14,400;

• Iceland, 50 kronur 1904, P-12, PMG Very Fine 25 Net: $10,800;

• Spain, 500 pesetas 1.10.1886, P-37, PMG Choice Very Fine 35 Net: $10,800.

And for the military girls and boys, there was a hard-to-find-but-worth-the-effort GB BMA £1 ND (1943-45) with BULGARIA overprint and serial number 39Z 000008 (P-M6b; S-B-306c). In PMG About Uncirculated 53, it fetched $9,600.
