Dollar Day opens May Regency sale

Legend’s 26th Regency Auction in May was a two-day event held May 16-17 in New Orleans that used the first day to offer 237 silver dollars.

The first day’s offerings were anchored by the P.F.M. Collection of Morgan Dollars, selections from the world-famous Aurora Borealis Collection of Toned Morgan Dollars, and the Crow River Collection of Peace Dollars.

The highest-grossing lot in the session was the 1892-S dollar graded MS-65 by the Professional Coin Grading Service from the P.F.M. Collection – the current No. 6 PCGS Registry Set – which sold for $193,875.

• Lot 171 – $1 1880-S MS-65+ CAC realized $10,281

• Lot 207 – $1 1921 Peace PCGS MS-66 CAC realized $18,212

• Lot 222 – $1 1927-D PCGS MS-66 CAC realized $41,125

• Lot 229 – $1 1934-S PCGS MS-66 CAC realized $32,900

• Lot 232 – $1 1925 PCGS MS-67+ CAC realized $32,900

Among the highlights of the second day was lot 299, a restrike Confederate States of America cent, Copper PCGS Proof-64 BN CAC, which realized $52,875.

“The Regency Auction enjoyed record phone, internet and live bidding in the room through both nights’ sales. We have never seen such a turnout for our auctions,” Laura Sperber said.

Minting a new 3-cent piece wasteful if not silly Mint a three-cents coin? In the Aug. 28 issue of Numismatic News , a Viewpoint article by Wayne Pearson advocated the issuance of a new three-cent denomination coin to replace the cent. I think this idea is silly since nothing can be bought for three cents. Minting such a denomination would be wasteful. The least expensive item I know of is a paper bag, which one can buy for 10 cents in California when buying groceries. Making any coin of a smaller denomination makes no sense. I advocate a complete reworking of all of our coin denominations as follows: A dime, as the smallest; a quarter; a half dollar; and a dollar and a five dollar, all in ascending order of size.
