Imagine coin prices expressed in Bitcoins

Bitcoin-realestate.com is now selling houses in exchange for Bitcoins. This can be taken either of two ways. You could be the owner of some real estate who wants to speculate in cyber currency. You could be an owner of a cyber currency who wants to get into hard assets instead. It hasn’t happened yet to my knowledge, but what about someone wanting to trade a cyber currency for collectible coins or vice versa? Or should we say purchase rare coins with Bitcoins? Right now cyber currencies and equities are two of the main culprits why not only coins but all collectibles in general are out of favor among investors and many former collectors. What if some of this cyber currency were to be offered when someone is going to buy collectible coins? Prices realized listed in Bitcoins from January 2017 would now be worth 16 times as much. That would put an 1804 dollar at over $50 million. Couldn’t the value of these rarities escalate due to their fixed supply versus this increased demand from o

Old notes weigh more than new ones

(Image courtesy https://www.uscurrency.gov) Would a stack of 490 new U.S. currency notes weigh more than a stack of 490 worn notes? The Bureau of Engraving and Printing says that there are 490 notes to a pound. Figures from Bob Cochran, published several years ago in Bank Note Reporter , indicate that circulated notes weigh more, by as much as 0.06 to 0.07 grams per note. This increase in weight appears to be the result of the dirt and grime picked up by the notes as they circulate in commerce.   What’s the story on the Argentine bank notes that were used as lottery tickets? Several of the provincial governments in Argentina issued small denomination bank notes that were used in weekly lottery drawings as tickets. The scheme was to match the last five digits of the note’s serial number with the numbers drawn. In most cases the prizes were either a multiple of the face value of the note, or a household appliance, but some of the special lotteries had a house as the first prize.

One more time: Last editor’s letter completes a long journey

Robert R. Van Ryzin Even though I have often written long feature articles—sometimes covering 10 pages or more—one of the things I figured I would never be able to write on a regular basis was an editorial such as this. That’s because I feared I would have nothing to say, or that I couldn’t come up with something worthwhile for it on time. Therefore, it was generally the last thing I did before an issue went to press, whether it be for Coins magazine (for which I’ve been writing one every month for 20+ years) or for its sister publication, Bank Note Reporter , which I also edit. But, somehow, I’ve managed, and I hope readers have enjoyed at least some of my efforts. So here goes for one last time. After 31 years with the firm, having been blessed to have as my profession what was also my passion, I have decided to retire. I began collecting coins in 1976 after purchasing a copy of Coins off a newsstand in the university town in which I then lived. What attracted me was a headli

New year offers many coins to acquire

A new year means there are coins with a new date on them to chase. In the old days, collectors simply bought a proof set and a mint set and had them all. It is no longer so easy. There are many coins that cannot be acquired in standard sets. That is actually a good thing, because most collectors cannot afford to buy many of these new coins because they are made of precious metals and/or come in very large sizes. I don’t have to do anything to convince most collectors that gold American Eagle and Buffalo coins are pricey. Even if the Mint sold them at melt value, a one-once gold coin has about $1,300 of metal value. Selling them for melt won’t happen. Collectors with the enough money are offered proof gold Eagle sets, which contain four coins that add up to 1.85 troy ounces of metal. Silver is more reasonably priced, but even so, putting a proof silver Eagle and an uncirculated collector version would add well over $100 to any set they were put into. Then there will be a reverse p

Thorpe honored on dollar’s reverse

Jim Thorpe is set to appear on the reverse of the 2018 Native American dollar coin. Legendary Native American athlete Jim Thorpe will appear on the reverse of the 2018 dollar coin. Artwork provided by the U.S. Mint shows him as a football player and an Olympic long jumper. The Mint’s discription says the 2018 reverse will depict Jim Thorpe, with the foreground elements highlighting his football and Olympic achievements. Inscriptions are “JIM THORPE,” “WA-THO-HUK” (Thorpe’s Sac and Fox tribe name), “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “$1.” United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso created the design. Collectors will get first crack at the new coin when products containing the it are scheduled to go on sale Feb. 15. The dollar coin obverse uses a design that was introduced in the year 2000. It shows Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The year, mintmark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are incused on the coin’s edg
