Heritage Offers Rare $20 Gold Piece For FUN Auction

Collectors of $20 gold pieces know the names Dr. Steven Duckor and Jay Brahin. These two major collectors have built famous sets of Saint Gaudens $20 gold pieces, which are also considered some of the most beautiful American coins.

Heritage Auctions will be offering a $20 Saint Gaudens in the July Summer FUN Auction #1317 that combines rarity, a high grade, and a famous pedigree. This 1927-S $20 graded PCGS MS-65 was previously owned by both Dr. Steven Duckor and Jay Brahin, a double pedigree that would impress even the most jaded gold coin collector. Before third-party grading came onto the scene in the 1980s and became the norm in the years that followed, Dr. Duckor considered this coin to be MS-66 quality. It is today graded MS-65 by PCGS.

Unlike the very common 1927 Philadelphia, the 1927-S minted in San Francisco is a very rare date for the $20 Saint series. At one point, less than five were believed to exist. However, small handfuls of this date were located in European bank hoards over the years, making this a scarce and desirable piece but still available in at least some small quantities today. Despite a population of over 3 million coins, less than 300 are certified in all grades by PCGS and NGC combined.

Given the popularity of collecting these gold coins and the rarity of the 1927-S, these coins are always in demand when they come up for bid. Similar pieces have sold for over $100,000 recently.

Record High Gold Price?

This week, the price of gold reached an all-time high price against the U.S. dollar. It closed Wednesday this week on the COMEX at $1,953.50 per troy ounce, well above even intraday gold prices during the previous peak in September 2011. Gold had previously set all-time high record prices against almost every other world currency last week. However, this record-high gold price needs to be noted with an asterisk. The reason the asterisk is needed is that the value of the U.S. dollar itself has declined over the years. As a consequence, the price of gold this week, if compared to a U.S. dollar of consistent purchasing power, is lower than the previous peak price in September 2011 of about $1,924 and even further below the January 1980 peak of about $850.
