Three BEP prints mark Apollo 11

With a significant anniversary coming up, it is not surprising that everybody wants to get in on the act.

The anniversary is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

The new entrant commemorating this historical milestone is the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

It has created three prints.

These are called the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Engraved Print Collection.

Sales begin Dec. 20 at noon Eastern Time.

The first card will ship the week of Jan. 21, 2019. The second print will be sent in the spring. The third card will go out to buyers in the summer.

“Mission” is the first print.

According to the BEP, “this print is symbolic of the United States Space Program’s mission leading up to the first manned moon landing and features an embossing of the Apollo 11 and the lunar surface, with an engraving of President John F. Kennedy and the inscription, ‘We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.’”

“The Eagle Has Landed” is the second print.

This print is emblematic of the historic proclamation “The eagle has landed” and features an engraving of President Richard M. Nixon with the inscription, “Because of what you have done, the heavens have become a part of man’s world. As you talk to us from the Sea of Tranquility, it inspires us to redouble our efforts to bring peace and tranquility to Earth.” This print also features an engraved representation of the famous “Buzz Aldrin on the Moon” photograph taken on July 20, 1969. The reflection in astronaut Aldrin’s helmet features astronaut Neil Armstrong, the United States flag, and the lunar lander. The background features the lunar module on the embossed surface of the moon.

“Giant Leap” is the third print.

This print captures the historic moment as the world eagerly looked to the heavens and heard Neil Armstrong’s voice declare, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The design features engravings of Neil Armstrong saluting the United States flag and an embossed footprint on the lunar surface, which together represent the efforts of the United States Space Program leading up to the first manned, moon landing on July 20, 1969.

These BEP prints are being sold by the U.S. Mint at (800) USA-MINT (872-6468) and in the Mint’s online store at https://catalog.usmint.gov/.

On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy carrying Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin.

When the lunar module landed four days later, the United States had won the space race with the Soviet Union.

Traditional craft of India: Handicrafts on Stamps Part II

Despite rapid social and technological changes in India, the use of craft products is an integral aspect of an Indian’s social life.  Handicraft aims at processing materials by hand with hand tools. The result of this can be a useful thing or a decorative item. The tradition of making handicrafts is deeply frozen in the social norms of Indian society. In any of the handmade products, a crafter transfers an aspect of their cultural heritage to the ideas, forms, material and manufacturing process of the craft. They’re skilled employees whose profession relies on manual skills. Their main tools are the power of work strategies. Handicraft contains plenty of implicit data that grows every year, along with skills. The order and apprentice system has been widely used to transfer skills and implicit data. This aspect of handicraft is recognized by India Post. In 2018, the Indian Postal Service has issued a series of handicrafts on stamps. The illustrated handicraft in these stamps series is
