NLG names Guth executive director

Ron Guth

Ron Guth takes charge of the Numismatic Literary Guild Sept. 1.

He succeeds Donn Pearlman, who served as interim executive director since the death of Ed Reiter in August 2017.

The NLG board of directors unanimously approved Guth’s appointment.

He is an award-winning author and researcher whose works include “Coin Collecting For Dummies,” “The 100 Greatest Women on Coins,” and the “Encyclopedia of United States Gold Coins 1795-1933” (co-authored with Jeff Garrett).

Guth is a Certified Public Accountant and has expertise in U.S. and world coins. He operates GermanCoins.com and is a former President of Professional Coin Grading Service and PCGSCoinFacts.com.

“For decades, the NLG has been the biggest supporter of numismatic writers, giving them the recognition they deserve for what is often a labor of love,” said Guth. “I look forward to continuing the NLG’s record of service and to preserve, build, and expand the NLG so that every numismatic writer will have the opportunity to hone their craft in a supportive environment.”

Pearlman used his time to lead a reform to streamline and update the annual awards competition categories “to bring them into the 21st century,” he said.

“It has been an honor to serve the NLG during the past year’s transition period. The NLG board members and I are grateful that Ron has accepted this important role in helping to promote numismatic education,” Pearlman added.

Established in 1968 originally to recognize and encourage outstanding newspaper and magazine writing about the hobby, the Numismatic Literary Guild has evolved into a nonprofit organization composed of hobby writers, editors, reporters, bloggers and content producers. It conducts an annual educational symposium and an awards dinner, “The Bash,” each summer in conjunction with the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money®.

Record High Gold Price?

This week, the price of gold reached an all-time high price against the U.S. dollar. It closed Wednesday this week on the COMEX at $1,953.50 per troy ounce, well above even intraday gold prices during the previous peak in September 2011. Gold had previously set all-time high record prices against almost every other world currency last week. However, this record-high gold price needs to be noted with an asterisk. The reason the asterisk is needed is that the value of the U.S. dollar itself has declined over the years. As a consequence, the price of gold this week, if compared to a U.S. dollar of consistent purchasing power, is lower than the previous peak price in September 2011 of about $1,924 and even further below the January 1980 peak of about $850. To give you some idea of the instability of the value of the U.S. dollar, just compare the M2 definition of the U.S. money supply, courtesy of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis: January 1980:      ...

Timothy Kenyon Mechanicsburg, Pa.   One of my resolutions is not to end up with 20 2020 ASE’s in different holders/OGP/signatures as I did in 2019.
