Dealer Hartzog dies at age 70

Longtime exonumia dealer Richard A. “Rich” Hartzog died Nov. 11, 2017 of metastatic bladder cancer at the age of 70.

Mr. Hartzog was a collector and dealer specializing in tokens, medals and other small collectibles including 19th century Illinois exonumia, Civil War tokens and slave tags.

He issued numerous auction catalogs and sold at shows and online over the course of 45 years in the business.

Operating under the name World Exonumia Press, he published several books of his own and others.

Mr. Hartzog was president of the Chicago Coin Club 1979 to 1982. He had served on the board of governors for the Central States Numismatic Society, Civil War Token Society, Token and Medal Society and Illinois Numismatic Association. He was also a member of the Rockford Coin Club among others.

Born Nov. 4, 1947 in Chicago and raised in Wheaton, Ill., Mr. Hartzog moved to Rockford after attending the University of Wisconsin at Platteville.

A “Celebration of Life” for Rich will take place at Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford, Ill., on Feb. 17, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. Interment will be at the Montrose Cemetery in Chicago.

Heritage Readies Long Beach Paper Money Auction

I look forward to sharing the auction results with you next month. The first note is Lot 20637, a $10,000 1934 Federal Reserve Note PMG-graded Unc. 66 EPQ. According to Heritage, the note is one of just three $10,000s certified by PMG at this level for all series and districts. Having perfect centering, ideal colors, and excellent eye appeal, it should be a great performer. The note is projected to exceed its estimate of $200,000-$300,000.
